The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
